Toning the Mid Section

Toning the mid section involves more than just the abdominal muscles. The mid section also includes the lower back. Horizontal abdomen muscles wrap around the waist like a belt and form part of the torso support system. The other part is composed of the spine and back muscles.

If you have ever had back pain of any kind, you understand how debilitating the pain can be. If you have not experienced this kind of pain you are very fortunate. There is not a movement a human being does that excludes the spine. Sitting, standing, running, jumping, and exercising all require the spine to be operating efficiently and pain-free. Toning the mid section can either prevent or lesson back problems.

Bad posture is a major contributor to back problems. Most people do not pay attention to the shape of their spine while sitting or standing. If you are one of the people who lets the shoulders slump, or stand with your spine at an angle, or don't sit up straight, you are setting yourself up for back problems as time progresses. Toning the mid section has two benefits. First, it strengthens the muscles in the back. Second, it makes you aware of good posture. Abdomen exercises must be done with proper technique in order to be effective. This means attention to the body line including the arching of the spine.

Years of poor posture can contribute to back problems. When the back hurts, you move less, and mobility and flexibility is seriously compromised. When the back weakens, even simple movements can be painful. Toning the mid section can restore flexibility to the spine and its surrounding muscles. This flexibility is critical to prevent further deterioration of the spine. The spine is made up of vertebrae that has a soft disc for cushioning in between each segment. The back muscles are then used to move the spine in different directions. These movements also engage the abdomen muscles in many circumstances such as bending or squatting. Toning of the mid section can help restore the resiliency of the spine.

Poor posture and other unnatural stresses on the spine can cause the discs in between the vertebrae to protrude. That is why it is so important to use proper back form when completing exercises. Toning the mid section can prevent the impact of poor habits affecting the spine from becoming debilitating. Crunches and other abdomen exercises have a significant ability to prevent back problems.

The abdominals and the back muscles work in opposition like a balance. When you do ab exercises, you are also exercising the back muscles. When toning the mid section, a good program will also include back strengthening exercises. The abdomen and back exercises can be mixed in a workout routine. Some exercises benefit both areas equally, like the plank. When performing any exercise that engages the back muscles, make sure the muscles have been warmed up first. Always do stretching exercises. The back has both long and short muscles and to gain full flexibility requires that muscles be extended. Always begin the back and abdomen exercises slowly also, using smooth moves that don't put sudden pressure or twists on the back muscles.

Toning the mid section is an important part of any exercise program. The mid section includes the abdomen and lower back muscles. To prevent back deterioration and pain, keeping the abdomen muscles strong should be a goal of a good toning regimen.
