Toning the Underarms

Toning the underarms is one of those activities that is frequently the source of jokes. Unfortunately, the underarm is probably one of the most ignored parts of the body. But when it gets ignored, the muscle sags and the skin gets loose. This creates a very unsightly area that is most noticeable when the arm is lifted. The underarms are the triceps muscles. They extend from the armpit to the elbow. The problem is when they are not kept firm, it is hard to get them into shape - not because they are hard to develop. It is because the exercises can take a little longer to be successful and so are avoided. There are people who faithfully go to the gym and work their entire body - except for the triceps.

When the triceps sag while holding up your arm, it looks like the whole upper arm is sagging with fat. It may not be fair, but it's just the way it is. Toning the underarms is important for a lot of reasons. First, it makes no sense to ignore these muscles if you are truly interested in overall fitness or conditioning. Second, sagging triceps are not attractive and can ruin the appearance of the body. Sagging triceps can also make you look older than you are and no one wants to look older. Toning the underarms should be a regular part of your exercise routine.

The triceps muscles are relatively small. Because of this, you don't have to do as many exercises as you would for the larger muscles. Inactivity creates sagging underarms. So conversely, show your triceps some action and they will respond! The best news is they respond at a very steady rate too. The key to exercises for toning the underarms is form. If you don't have the right form, you can easily waste your time. That is one reason people believe it is so hard to firm up the triceps. It is not because it really is more difficult than any other muscle. It is because they are not doing them right.

Triceps are actually composed of three muscles. They are used for extending the arm. You will use weights for many of the exercises for toning the underarms. The weight forces the triceps to work harder so you get a lot of benefits from the few exercises.

Toning the underarms may take a while longer, but it is well worth the effort. You will feel the difference the very first workout, but don't expect to see real firming until you have worked your triceps for at least two months.

  • Kickbacks using weights
  • Triceps extensions using weights (double handed)
  • Triceps dips
  • Pushups

There is also gym equipment that is intended for toning the underarms if you belong to a fitness center. The pulley machines have a bar you pull down by bending the arm at the elbows.

As was mentioned, form is everything if you want toning of the underarms. You should keep your arms close to your head when you are doing the extensions. You must keep your elbow against your waist while doing kickbacks. The biggest mistake made during triceps workouts is letting the arm go in different directions. You must concentrate on the triceps muscles when you are working on toning them with exercises.

Don't forget that you should also be working on reducing your body fat while doing any toning workout. The only way to lose excess underarm fat is by losing excess body fat. Eat nutritional meals and always include exercises for toning the underarms in your routines.
