Shelby Murphy

As co-owner of Empower Personal Fitness Studio, creator and coach of Fun Girl Fitness Boot Camp, and national editor of PFP magazine and multimedia, Shelby’s career is the perfect fusion of her two strengths – fitness and journalism. Shelby stepped into the editor position at PFP in June of 2008 while heading up the high-quality, cutting-edge training studio that opened December 2006 and promptly won the Chamber of Commerce’s Rising Star Award in 2007 and the Business Excellence Award in 2010. The intimate studio now serves more than 90 regular clients, often has a waiting list, and generates new clients almost solely from word-of-mouth.

Shelby Training

In 2007, Shelby founded a boot camp in Granbury and has built it into the biggest group exercise program in the county. In 2009, Shelby transformed her existing boot camp into Fun Girl Fitness Boot Camp -- a system she created to fill the gaps that were missing in traditional boot camps. Fun Girl Fitness extends beyond boot camp, however, into an online portal for fitness information, entertainment, and products. Shelby also created the Love, Your Body messages, free to online subscribers, that inspires women across the country to put themselves first and honor their bodies daily.

Prior to stepping out on her own, Shelby served as Marketing and Member Services Director and Lead Trainer for Performance Zone Fitness Center. She also trained independently at LifeForce Fitness, a studio in Austin, Texas and wrote, as a freelancer, for a variety of publications including the Austin Business Journal, Austin Fit magazine, Natural Living Today, CarbLite magazine, the Houston Chronicle and many more. She also wrote and self-syndicated a column called RadiantWomen. Altogether, her byline has appeared more than 1,500 times in regional and national publications. Shelby received her degree with honors in journalism from the University of Houston in 1992 and worked for several public relations firms up until her transition into fitness and freelancing in the late 1990s.

Shelby is honored with being lead judge for the PFP/Power Systems Trainer of the Year contest, a national contest that selects an accomplished  personal trainer who contributes to his/her community and the fitness industry. She personally awards the distinction every year at the national IHRSA (International Health Racquet and Sports Association). She participated in Leadership Granbury’s 2006-2007 class, served on the Granbury Parks and Rec board, and actively speaks about fitness and business locally and nationally. She is married to her business partner, Louis, whom she met in a high school weights class, and has two healthy, active children.
